What Made You Smile in May? | Smile Day Project | Shining Moments Photography

Give yourself something to smile about + take time for yourself in your crazy busy life.  If you’ve followed me or read my blog for any amount of time you know how much I love photographing teens and seniors. I can get caught up in the business side of professional photography and sometimes forget to slow down and take some photography time to myself. But, every May I have a tradition, one day that I get to photograph my family, without complaint, + it’s an easy Mother’s Day gift for them.  Well, except for the dressing up part, which is not their favorite but they know how much I love this day. This is my SMILE day, a day that I slowly edit over months so I can make it last as long as possible before I choose which images I’m going to add to my walls.

This year I wanted to go to Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois for our photo shoot. The weather was peeeeerrfect on Mother’s Day, but to sweeten the deal we made a stop at our favorite sweet shop, All Chocolate Kitchen in Geneva, Illinois. We each chose a new dessert to try and let our forks hop between all the plates to get every last crumb! While we were all still in our sugar coma we were off to walk the park. We all jumped in front of the lens for both posed + funny memories that will keep me smiling until next Mother’s Day {unless I can talk them into going out again before then 😉 }.

Full disclosure…the entire day wasn’t all magical and smiles, there was some whining on the boy side with the “no sport shorts allowed” rule + the infamous words, “Are we done yet.” But that’s to be expected, it was a full day and I know they don’t love photos as much as I do, but they do it for me.  Going to Cantigny this year gave us a chance to wander the park and find a cheery + bright couch to sit on for a minute to re-group. It was also a great spot to pull the embarrassing Mom act in hopes of getting their smiles back and a laugh or two.

Make a SMILE DAY each month for yourself. It doesn’t have to be a special occasion or an entire day, but take time for yourself. My last SMILE DAY I was on my own and it was just the quiet time I needed 😉 You can catch that post HERE with a few of my favorite Geneva stops.  I hope all you AMAZING Mom’s had a memorable Mother’s Day and maybe even jumped in front of a camera with your Kiddos too!  They are only this age once and we have to capture it before it’s gone {and adding chocolate just makes it that much sweeter}!!!
